The Battle of Ramree Island
An unconventional perspective on one of the most horrific battles of WWII
Dear humans, thank you for inviting us To the feast; you rang the dinner bell and we came Ravenous with hunger and thirst. We heard the shells first; great big explosions, frantic propellers The glow on the horizon. Tasting fire in the ocean. Driven back to the swamp; waiting frozen. They stumbled through the dark, half blind, bleeding. Their samurai swords were useless against our feeding. Screams ring out; guttural against the lull of the waves. I ripped and I tore, claws sliding against the mangroves, Rolling in blood and brackish graves. Ramree Island in 1945, a midnight buffet beyond compare. They fled into our jaws, trembling war meat, running scared. Bullets sinking into mud, fumbled into wet magazines Ineffective against our rippling hides. Eyes glowing hellfire red Against the salted tides. Teeth sharpened on military issue bayonets, sinking to the bottom With their gear and cigarettes. Engorged now, we slither back into the sea Ancient, victorious, and predatory. Come back anytime for a midnight feast; at war or at peace You all taste the same. With warm regards -- and cold crocodilian hearts.
